Vintage in Use

Monday, 18 November 2013

As already mentioned, a lot of the stuff I use daily is vintage. Here's another round-up of what can be found around my house.

I've always been curious about the vacuum coffee makers but didn't want to buy one new and realize I don't really like it. So I guess I found one that somebody else discarded for that reason, without even trying it once. I'm a total convert, who knew there's coffee that's not bitter. This is the Bodum Santos vacuum coffee maker, introduced in 1958 and made to this day.

A bit more than a decade ago my aunt briefly operated a second hand store in Estonia and I helped her out when I could while also going to school. And in return, I got first dibs on whatever I wanted, which is how I came across this blanket. It's been with me ever since, surviving all my moves, including the transatlantic one. It's designed by Viola GrĂ¥sten for Tidstrand, a purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden. The same pattern comes in other colours as well, I've seen blue, red and orange.

Today I picked up a Charley Harper poster for the U.S. National Park Service. I have a feeling we'll hold onto this one for a while.

  1. The poster is a glorious score, beautiful. I love the behind behind the coffee maker too, will have to keep an eye out for one while out hunting. The conventional coffee pot is such a mess and just an eye sore to look at.

    1. Did you know you can order the poster, and some of the others, from the US Government Book Store? http://bookstore.gpo.gov/products/sku/024-005-00667-2 They are priced reasonably, but are, of course, unframed.

  2. I want the green Tidstrand! I have a blue one that was my Swedish mother's..

    1. Email me at modern squirrel gmail com and maybe we can figure something out :)
