Killer Stuff and Tons of Money

Thursday, 14 November 2013

Got your attention, didn't I?
Killer Stuff and Tons of Money is a title of a book written by Maureen Stanton where she follows around a friend who's an antiques dealer. Granted, the protagonist buys and sells items that are too old for my taste but some lessons and stories in here are universal.

One of the main points this book drives home that this is a business where you can never afford to stop learning. By learning and seeing what others are doing, you will begin to discern what is rare, what is valuable and what are the strengths and weaknesses in others.

While the book touches on the subject of collecting, it's mainly about the business side. If you're fascinated by collections, please read Edmund de Waal's The Hare with Amber Eyes. It's well worth it.

Another point that Killer Stuff and Tons of Money makes is that you should be prepared to anticipate what can fly under the radar. Some of my favourite purchases have come from auction houses and antique stores, since that's where quality stuff ends up. But sometimes the sellers don't care, don't have the time to research or just don't like that stuff particularly.

This is a long-winded way of saying that I recently bought some Roberta di Camerino handbags that flew under the radar.

And picked up this mis-identified Holmegaard pendant lamp. It's so gorgeous, I wish I had space for it!

  1. Totally agree with that sentiment. With internet/smartphone usage making lookups so easy, and tons more people picking thrifts to sell, it's become the only way to stay alive in this game. I always expect 90% of the "easy" stuff to be gone, so finding stuff under the radar is the key

    1. Agreed. And to add one more layer, I think it helps to know what the others are good at and what they don't know. If somebody loves glass and sells a lot of it, then see what jewelry they have. The prices might be a pleasant surprise.

  2. That lamp is exquisite! I am learning about it right now. Thanks.

    1. Thank you! The lamp will be part of a Taste Setters sale soon - only the best :)
